School Achievements:

  • 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant which began funding of the Encore! Jr. After School Program in 2004
  • Ms. Cheryl Lee was chosen as Roosevelt’s and Kingsport’s Elementary Teacher of the Year in 2004.
  • Ms. Trish Jones was chosen as Roosevelt's Teacher of the Year in 2005
  • Ms. Mary Jackson was chosen as Roosevelt’s and Kingsport’s Elementary Teacher of the Year in 2006.
  • Ms. Debbie Valk was chosen as Roosevelt’s and Kingsport’s Elementary Teacher of the Year in 2007.
  • Roosevelt students honored at Milligan College for achievement in photography. The students were honored as their work was displayed at Milligan in January of 2005

School Programs:

  • Roosevelt School Chorus
  • Lifeskills Education and Positive Discipline philosophy at the core of character education. Class meetings are a vital part of Roosevelt school life.
  • Attendance Pep Rally and mystery celebrations instituted for perfect attendance.
  • Thematic instruction offered at all grade levels (modeled after Susan Kovalik's Integrated Thematic Instruction and Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences)
  • Special Needs Inclusion model
  • Literacy block is comprehensive and based on the most current research on reading and writing. Literacy is highly individualized, and formative assessment drives instruction. Draft books are used by all students, and spelling and grammar are integrated into writing. Reading instruction is also integrated into writing. A reading specialist and teacher leaders continue to implement the coaching model in literacy.
  • Math instruction is research-based as well. Math resources are housed in the Math Resource Room, and a math team also acts as facilitators in the coaching model of staff development. A math specialist and teacher leaders support with instruction of teachers and students. Math instruction is based on formative assessment and units are created using Kingsport's Curriculum Maps. Math is hands-on and as real world as possible. The school utilizes the Investigations Math Series.
  • Related Arts: art, music, Spanish, library, counseling, and physical education
  • Spanish education offered to all students as a Related Arts class
  • School counseling program with a full time counselor
  • Library Media services with a full time librarian
  • Reading Resource and Math Resource Rooms with a full-time reading and math specialist
  • Lifeskills Awards at the conclusion of the year

  • Student drama opportunities offered periodically (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe presented in January of 2006)
  • Service opportunities: Second Harvest drive, Day of Giving to the Book Room, Tsunami relief drive, hurricane relief drive, School Partner, and penpal with the USS Roosevelt, etc.
  • Continued teacher training in literacy, mathematics, Integrated Thematic Instruction, Positive Discipline, Poverty Education, and brain-based research• Classrooms are designed with the latest research on brain compatible environments and strategies
  • WELL I AM - Wellness, Explorations, Literacy and Language Immersion with Arts and Math -Students experience a session of immersion with the Related Arts Team with activities based on curriculum and arts. Students experience WELL I AM periodically throughout the year. This program is unique to Roosevelt.
