Dobyns-Bennett Makes Newsweek Top High Schools List

KINGSPORT - Dobyns-Bennett High School has been named by Newsweek magazine as one of the top high schools in the country.

The report, issued this week, lists more than 1,400 schools that made the grade based on data collected by the magazine. To determine the top high schools, Newsweek takes the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests given at a school in May, and divides that figure by the number of seniors graduating in May or June. All public schools listed achieved a ratio of at least 1.000, meaning they had given as many tests in 2008 as they had graduates. Those schools with a 1.000 ratio are listed on the Newsweek website, and the 100 schools with the highest ratios are named in the magazine. The rankings, according to the magazine, identify the top 5% of high schools in the country.

Dobyns-Bennett High School was ranked 1,338th with a ratio of 1.158. The school only administers Advanced Placement tests and does not offer an International Baccalaureate or Cambridge test program. Approximately 426 Advanced Placement tests were administered to D-B students in 2008. The number of seniors graduating from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 2008 was 368.

An estimated 81% of Dobyns-Bennett High School students who completed an AP test scored at least a 3 or above. An AP exam score ranging from a 3 to a 5 qualifies students for college credit in the subject area. The average score for all the AP tests taken by D-B students was 3.51 in 2008.

"I am proud of the fact that the Dobyns-Bennett Advanced Placement Program has afforded the school the opportunity to be recognized once again by Newsweek Magazine.  Recognition for academic achievement is always an honor.  I want to congratulate our students and our teachers for making this recognition possible," said Earl Lovelace, Dobyns-Bennett High School Principal.

This is the sixth time Dobyns-Bennett High School has been named to the Newsweek List. The lists were published in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009. Twelve Tennessee schools were ranked on the Newsweek list.
