Coordinated School Health

Kingsport City School Coordinated School Health  program is a coordinated and comprehensive approach to health where schools, families, and communities work together in a focused manner to address six critical health behaviors identified by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The six critical health behaviors are:

  • inadequate physical activity
  • unhealthy eating behaviors
  • tobacco use
  • behaviors that result in HIV infections, other STDs and unintended pregnancies
  • alcohol and other drug use
  • behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence

Mission of Coordinated School Health

The office of Coordinated School Health works to provide a coordinated approach to school health that strives to improve students' knowledge and attitudes about health as well as empower our students to achieve academic success and life-long health.

Overview of Coordinated School Health

There are eight components in a Coordinated School Health program.  By definition, all Coordinated School Health components work together to improve the lives of students and their families.  Although these components are listed separately, it is their composite that allows CSH to have significant impact. The eight components include: health education, physical education/physical activity, health services, nutrition services, health promotion for staff, counseling and psychological services, healthy school environment and student/parent/community involvement.

In order to implement a Coordinated School Health program, each school in Kingsport City Schools has a Healthy School Team with school and parent representatives.  These teams use the School Health Index to assess their school programs and develop health priorities for their school.
